Stave Blake Coastal Trail to Måtind

Day 12 – 13: Tromso to Nordmela and sauna run

Day 12: A Journey of Unpredictable Wonders

As our tires rolled from Tromso to Nordmela, covering 170 km and navigating two ferries, Day 12 promised another chapter of surprises. Our first pause at Ørnfløya, a modest 150-meter hill, unfolded a panorama of Sommarøy and its neighboring islands. Yet, the unexpected challenge surfaced as our GPS led us astray, guiding us to private property. Undeterred, we found a small roadside spot to park and the little path took us to the breathtaking views.

Weather whims of Norway greeted us at Ørnfløya’s summit — a chilly breeze contrasted by a pleasant climate just meters below. Our original plan to conquer Segla succumbed to a day-long rain, reminding us of Norway’s fickle weather.

Lunch at Anne Grete Jensen Havfrua Kro in Sommarøy recharged our spirits, offering both charm and reasonable prices. Our onward journey to Brensholmen for a ferry to Botnhamn and another to Andenes unfolded unparalleled views, though time slipped away.

Late arrival at Stave Camping & Hot Pools in Nordmela became a testament to the day’s twists. The anticipation of a beach sauna and an ocean-view room, however, promised an evening of tranquility. Norway’s surprises persisted, but our spirits remained resilient.

Day 13: Peaks, Trails, and the Norwegian Sea Symphony

Rising with the northern sun, Day 13 beckoned us onto the Stave-Bleik Coastal Trail toward Måtind. The sun graced our journey, revealing the beauty of the Vesteralen islands. What the trail promised as an easy family hike turned into a thrilling adventure, scaling steep ascents and offering panoramic distractions.

The descent challenged us, with red dots guiding our way, yet the rocks seemed to play a game of randomness. Scaling slippery edges just above the sea, we emerged at Stave Camping, a bit worse for wear, but with exhilaration and captivating memories etched into our being.

Our adventure continued with a beach sauna rendezvous overlooking the Norwegian Sea. The icy sea plunge, surprisingly bearable, yielded to the warmth of the sauna. As the day concluded, our cabin embraced us with its cozy charm, and the sea view provided the perfect backdrop for reflection, marking the end of yet another unforgettable day in Norway’s embrace.

Day 11: Alta River Camp to Tromso 390 km/5,5 hours

Day 11 of our epic journey: From the scenic Alta River Camp to the vibrant city of Tromso, covering 390 km in just 5 and a half hours. We climbed the steps to Fløya mountain for breathtaking views at 671 meters. A cozy café awaited at the summit, treating us to warm tea before descending to the city. Dinner at Casa Inferno offered delicious pizzas, while Ølhallen brewpub, Tromso’s iconic establishment, served up a memorable evening with an extensive tap selection and the most expensive beer we’ve ever had – two Norwegian IPAs for 36 EUR. A day of contrasts, from nature’s grandeur to Tromso’s lively brew scene.”
